What: Free public Open House to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the historic home of the scientist/author Rachel Carson (1907 – 1964).
When: Saturday, May 6, 2017 • 12 Noon to 3:00 p.m.
Where: 11701 Berwick Road, Silver Spring, MD 20904.
Program: The Open House will feature talks on environmental topics, music, poetry, plus nature-themed activities for children.

Noon – 12:15 • MAGPIE: “A Musical Tribute, Part 1” • A musical celebration will be performed by the internationally acclaimed, husband and wife duo of Greg Artzner and Terry Leonino.
12:15 – 12:30 • Meredith Davies Hadaway: “A Reading of Nature-Inspired Poetry”
12:30 – 1:15 • Dr. Bridget Stutchbury: “New Discoveries in Songbird Migration” • A distinguished scientist and leading authority on migratory songbirds, Dr. Stutchbury is a recognized an international birding expert. A Professor of Biology at York University in Toronto, she holds a “Canada Research Chair in Ecology and Conservation Biology.” Dr, Stutchbury’s Silence of the Songbirds has been described as, “A joy for bird-watchers and non bird-watchers alike.” (Thomas E. Lovejoy) and, “A must read for anyone who cares about our planet and our place in it.” (David Kroodsma). Dr, Stutchbury’s work is included in The Messenger, a noted film about migratory birds.

1:30 – 2:15 • Dr. Jessica Dimuzio: “Journey of A Wildlife Conservationist” • Dr. Dimuzio is a veterinarian specializing in wildlife preservation who has researched and taught conservation programs in Africa, Asia and North America. “Dr. D.” loves to get kids and adults excited about wildlife and their natural habitats through her nonfiction storytelling, classroom talks and nature walks; programs she provides through “Nature Tales and Trails, LLC,” a company she founded in 2011. She is the author of two delightful, award-winning books for children: Bark! Bark! Bark for my Park! and Bow Wow Wow! Green Beans Now! Both books are written from her dog’s perspective in an appealing and humorous way.
